Football fans across Europe turn their attention to Monaco today, Thursday, August 27, 2026, for the 2026–27 UEFA Champions League league phase draw, featuring 36 teams after the completion of the qualifying rounds.

How does the Champions League draw work?
It is important to forget the old group-stage format.
There are now 36 teams in one league table.
Each team plays:
8 matches against 8 different opponents.
The opponents are distributed as follows:

Can teams from the same country face each other?
In principle, no.
Teams from the same domestic association are not drawn against each other during the league phase.
A club also cannot face more than two opponents from the same country among its eight league-phase opponents, subject to UEFA’s draw constraints.
How is qualification decided?
After all eight matches are completed, the 36 clubs are placed in one overall league table.
Positions 1 to 8
Qualify directly for the Round of 16.
Positions 9 to 24
Enter a two-legged knockout play-off to determine the remaining eight teams that qualify for the Round of 16.
Positions 25 to 36
Are eliminated from the competition.
This makes every point important, because clubs are not only fighting to qualify, but also trying to finish in the top eight and avoid two additional play-off matches.
When does the Champions League league phase begin?
The league phase begins in September 2026 and continues until January 2027.

Who could get the hardest draw?
